Flat-Top Höfner 496 Jumbo, made in 1962, fully restored, a dream!

Instrument:
A beautiful one-of-a-kind Höfner 496 Jumbo, nothing but pure eye candy. Handwritten body date from March 23rd, 1962, to be seen at the picture (German article in GrandGTRs provides the wrong date!). Top-of-the-range guitar, back then the most valuable and expensive Höfner flat top available. Price in 1962 was 652 German Mark (DM), nearly three times more expensive as the average monthly income and unreachable for ordinaly folks like you and I! A massive and heavy piece of guitar history. Extensively decorated with many luxury features, she’s at the same level as an original Gibson J200, without no doubt key inspiration for the 496. Removable neck with Stauffer-Legnani system, floating neck construction as many archtops have. D shape with volute at the headstock, steel truss rod. Curved back, comparable to the Pliage Maccaferri style. Gold plated hardware, wonderfully flamed maple, ebony and real mother of pearl – no wish remains unfulfilled.

Material:
Only the most expensive premium materials have been used. Massive spruce top with fine annual rings, back and sides are made of amazing flamed maple. Five layer neck (maple-mahogany-beech-mahogany-maple), going through headstock. Ebony fingerboard with eight bow-tie inlays of real mother of pearl and two additional decoration stripes of white pearloid. Ebony bridge, body-end, pickguard and headstock face with the typical, extensive Höfner lily of the valley inlays, all handmade. Open, gold plated Höfner tuners with transparent crème white pearloid knobs. Extensive bindings of marbled pearloid everywhere, up to six layers. Everything is in complete original condition.

Instruments history:
This guitars life has been rough and she’s been going through a 30 years lasting tough professional use. A South German jazz musician treated her as his all time work horse, not as a collectors item. Changing pickups, from DeArmond soundhole pickup to a floating neck pickup to a humbucker, glued at the top in front of the bridge, came and were changed again. Several neck refrets, luckily done by professionals who didn’t ruin the binding by sawing in… Evening by evening she was at endless small stages, smoky bars and club concerts. Finally her career ended, when she was heavily damaged at the lower bout side at a concert – it’s said, someone kicked her massively… Then she went to the Munich Lebok collection, well known amongst guitar collectors. There, the damage has been fixed temporarily and she wasn’t played for years. After the collection was redissolved, another collector and journalist took her to Frankfurt. He wrote a long article about her and a 1971 twin sister, published in issue 5/2016 in famous German GrandGTRs magazine (watch downloadable PDF). Finally we could get our hands on her, still totally covered by ages of dirt and nicotine and nearly unplayable due to the fully worn and – at the upper positions – filed off frets. Within the past months we restored and resetted her back to the original 1962 condition.

Restoration works:
Complete neck reset incl. new frets and fingerboard dressing, repair of the Stauffer neck fixing system. Again we fixed the old side damage, this time very careful and long lasting. Still visible but very stable and with a flat smooth surface. Careful retouching of dozens of scratches and dents, incl. several holes such as the old jack socket drill hole. Also we fixed some binding damages and missing binding pieces. The fully nicotine covered tuners have been cleaned and restored, the transparent pegs had a dirty brown color before we started… Finally we mounted new Pyraid strings and did an full setup.

Actual condition:
Ready for a time capsule from 1962? Here we go! This guitar is in the same condition as she has been in the music store 55 years ago – but without the wonderful authentic patina from 30 years of tough stage work and travelling. A wonderful icon, of which blue grass, country or Oberkrainer musicians dream about. Eye candy on every stage and an investment for serious collectors. No damage, no smell, perfect frets and freatboard, neck is straight as a pole. State of the art string action with 2 mm at 12th fret, no buzz. The sound is at the same level as every original Gibson J200. Massive basses, wonderful wooden middles and crystal clear trebles, very harmonic together, watch the Grand GTRs article too. We doubt, if there’s a better 1962 469 for sale worldwide!

Measures:
Overall length 40,9”/104 cm, body length 20,3”/51,5 cm,16” body; lower bout width 16,1”/41 cm, waist width 9,9”/25 cm, upper bout width 12”/30,5 cm; body depth 4,1”/10,5 cm at nut, 4,6”/11,8 cm at waist, 4,1”/10,5 cm at lower bout; scale length 25,2”/64 cm (nut to saddle), fingerboard width 1,8”/4,5 cm at nut, 20,1”/5,2 cm at 12th fret; overall weight 2.190 g, string action on 12th fret 0,08”/2 mm.
