12-string flat top Hopf Jumbo, around 1965

Instrument:
12 string Hopf Jumbo flat top guitar. Built in Germany around 1965. Already shows modern details, as defined by the US and upcoming Japanese brands back then, such as the missing zero fret, string fixation with bridge pins or the massive mahogany body. Proves the technical foresight of the company, already 50 years ago.

Material:
A massive kind of guitar. Nice spruce top with mahogany sides and back. Bolted on neck, made of the typical multi layer maple wood, featuring a steel truss rod and a rosewood fingerboard. Also rosewood bridge with pins. Open tuners.

Instruments history:
This is a true veteran, that’s obvious. You can and have to see it. For many years she hung from the ceiling of an old junk hut. Then, a huge clean-up took place and amongst other stuff she was chosen to be disposed at the bulk waste collection. Luckily we heard about that and adopted the poor wreck immediately. Of course she was in very bad condition: Broken neck, cracked top, smashed nut, bridge pins, truss rod cover and neck screw covers were missing. No need to say she was unplayable… And the whole thing was terribly filthy.

Restoration works:
First we glued and fixed the broken neck and reinforced ti with six wooden plugs – we assume, it will never again cause trouble. We sanded the back side of the neck and coated it with matt varnish. Like this you can see the old damage, but you can’t feel it anymore. Also the top crack has been fixed, the top sounds and vibrates as good as new again. Fingerboard and frets have been sanded and polished, fingerboard then oiled. The nut has been replaced by a matching new spare part. Two new plastic covers from a cabinet replaced the missing originals of the neck screws. Truss rod cover has been built of original old two layer celluloid material. Als the whole guitar has been cleaned extensively in- and outside, all laquer surfaces have been polished. We preserved the wonderful patina of the top and slighlty covered it with matte laquer. An old jack socket hole at the lower side has been closed, the worst scratches and dents carefully retouched. Then, the rusty tuners have been overhauled completely. Finally a set of old original German string pegs and new strings have been mounted, a setup done – that’s it.

Actual condition:
This wonderful Jumbo isn’t an artificial “relic”, but a true and authentic workhorse with lot’s of mojo. But in perfect technical condition again! Comfortable low string action, nice sound, easy going tuners, state of the art usability – this Hopf is ready for another 50 years of music. The old damages can still be seen, but they don’t have any negative influence and are perfectly fixed. The fingerboard has a very comfortable width, enough place also for all not so small fingers. No pristine collectors item but a true player with character for real musicians, perfectly matching jeans and leather jacket, a statement for folk and country.

Measures:
Overall length 43,1”/109,5 cm, body length 20,1”/51 cm, lower bout width 16”/40,5 cm, waist width 9,3”/23,5 cm, upper bout width 11,6”/29,5 cm; body depth 3,9”/9,8 cm at neck, 4,3”/11 cm at lower bout; scale length 25”/64 cm (nut to saddle), fingerboard width 2”/5 cm at nut, 2,4”/6 cm at 12th fret; overall weight 2.690 g, string action on 12th fret 0,08-0,12”/2-3 mm.
