Framus 06001 Dix 12, 1973

Built in September 1973 (stamp 73 I), this Dix dreadnought comes from a time when the economic situation of Framus became more and more critical. At that time, the Dix was the entry-level model below the Texan, pure understatement, but Dix guitars are known for their powerful, rich sound and are among the best acoustic guitars Framus has built. After five decades, good examples are now becoming increasingly rare, especially in the perfect condition presented here.

While most Dix guitars have a Limba top, this one scores with a Kollitz Alpine spruce top. The arched and beautifully grained back is made of massive mahogany, the sides are made of maple. The top is clear lacquered, the sides were color-matched to the back and lightly stained brown. The clear lacquered neck is made of the indestructible and complex to manufacture beech multiply wood, including the headstock made in one piece throughout. Rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays in five frets and side dots in six frets. Open tuners with creamy white celluloid handles.

Instruments history:
Unknown. We took it over from a private owner who offered it to us because he never played it.

Restoration work:
We have blown out the body and cleaned and polished all the lacquer surfaces. The edges of the body have been neatly refinished. The frets were sanded and polished, and the fingerboard was slightly sanded and oiled. As usual, we disassembled the tuners, cleaned and then re-oiled them and polished the hardware. Of course, the guitar got a set of new Pyramid strings and a basic setup to go with it.

Current condition:
This Dix is practically as new and untouched, simply flawless. Neither varnish cracks nor playing marks, fretboard and fretsticks as good as new, the neck perfectly straight - this is how the guitar must have come from the dealer 50 years ago. It sounds excellent, like a Dix should sound: Fat, loud, bassy, plus bell-clear and harmonically integrated trebles, fast-responding and with endless sustain. Twelve strings don't get any better than this. With its low string action, it plays like a breeze and like a modern guitar. It's a beautiful collector's item, but also the perfect addition to the portfolio of any demanding guitarist who doesn't yet have a 12-string.

Overall length 43.3”/110 cm; body length 20.1”/51 cm; lower bout width 15.7”/40 cm; waist width 10.8”/27,5 cm; upper bout width 11.6”/29,5 cm; body depth 3.9”/10 cm; scale length 24.6”/62,5 cm (zero fret to saddle); fingerboard width 1.9”/4,8 cm at nut, 2.3”/5,7 cm at 12th fret; overall weight 2.200 g; string action on 12th fret 0.08”/2 mm (adjustable!).
