Framus 5/197 Jumbo, Luxor type, 1971

The Luxor Type Jumbo is exactly the same as the Framus 5/197 except for the design, the missing bindings and the Luxor soundhole label. In the seventies, Luxor was a buying syndicate of independent music stores that wanted to bundle their purchasing volume to get better prices from the dominant manufacturers. The label bears the usual Framus date stamp, here 71C, so the guitar was built in March 1971.

The body is made of maple, the neck as well and was assembled from two solid pieces glued lengthwise. It has a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays. The bridge is also made of rosewood, shows the familiar moustache shape and the usual "collar corners" metal decorations. The three-tone sunburst finish is very cleanly done. Open tuners with pearloid pegs.

Instruments history:
Unknown. The guitar was part of a collection of Framus acoustic guitars brought together between 2005 and 2010. Due to lack of space it was given away at the beginning of 2021.

Restoration work:
Complete cleaning inside and out, bale polishing of the nitro lacquer. Frets and fingerboard lightly sanded and polished, fingerboard oiled. Tuners disassembled, cleaned and oiled. New strings mounted and setup done.

Current condition:
This is a wonderful country & western style jumbo. The condition can be described as almost mint given its 50 years and of course 100% original and unaltered. The varnish shines with great depth and is perfectly preserved except for a few mini scratches and dents. The neck is straight as a die, the string action is very low, fretboard and frets are in mint condition. The Jumbo has probably never left its living room and has certainly not been played much. Patina is almost non-existent and of course the body and neck are free of wood or varnish cracks, breaks or other damage. Everything works perfectly and is stable and fully resilient. The sound of the guitar is top-notch, open, loud, with great harmonic range, while being nice and woody and warm with lots of bass. The Luxor Jumbo fits with its condition in any collection, but is also a wonderful sounding player guitar and style icon in any country band.

Overall length 41.7”/106 cm, body length 20.3”/51,5 cm, lower bout width 16.3”/41,5 cm, waist width 9.6”/24,5 cm, upper bout width 12”/30,5 cm; body depth 3.9”/10 cm; scale length 24.8”/63 cm (nut to saddle), fingerboard width 1.7”/4,2 cm at nut, 2”/5,2 cm at 12th fret; overall weight 2.330 g, string action on 12th fret 0.08”/2 mm, fully adjustable.
