Höfner 492 round shoulder 12, 1972

The 492 from the mid-price segment was one of Höfner's most successful 12-string guitars. It was available in the UK as the "Hofner Western" and was built for 21 years from 1964 to 1985. Our 492 has the handwritten date 1972 on the soundhole sticker and is one of the last round-shoulder models before Höfner changed the model to the normal Dreadnought shape.

The top is made of fine grained spruce, sides and back of mahogany. The neck is made of one piece of maple throughout, including the headstock. It has a truss rod and a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays in six frets. The tailpiece is also made of rosewood with a fully compensatable bridge saddle. Plus typical Höfner decorative inlays in the headstock, multi-ply bindings around the body and a four-ply pickguard with Höfner engraving. Closed, high-quality Kolb single tuners.

The beautiful and stylistically perfectly matching Schaller pickup was retrofitted along with the jack socket in the strap button.

Instruments history:
The Höfner was in the possession of a professional musician for many years and was also used for studio recordings. The guitarist also had the pickup installed - a faultless and professional job. The 492 was always treated very gently and carefully. Due to the reduction of his stock, the musician offered us this Höfner (and a Framus Texan) - we do not let ourselves be asked long for guitars in this top condition.

Restoration work:
Complete cleaning, blowing out the body and polishing all lacquer surfaces. The fingerboard was lightly dressed and oiled, the frets polished. The tuners have been completely disassembled, cleaned and re-oiled. (As an original replacement part, the set alone is worth at least €200!) Since the pickup and jack socket/strap pin were perfectly installed, we left it exactly the same. Of course, both can be removed again without leaving any residue, if you want to have a 492 in its original condition. Finally, we mounted new bronze strings and performed a setup.

Current condition:
The Höfner impresses with its quality, we have an upscale equipment in this mid-range guitar. Everything works flawlessly, the guitar is stable, solid and immediately usable without restrictions. It is, of course, absolutely clean and odor-free, the lacquer surfaces shine and the fingerboard and frets are like new. You won't find any flaws: Exactly three tiny cracks in the transparent topcoat of the top, a few micro scratches on the back - for a 50 year old guitar, it is actually as good as new. Of course, it sounds very nice, typically silvery like a twelve-string has to. The pickup amplifies this flawlessly and reliably, as you would expect from a Schaller. Thanks to low string action, the Höfner plays surprisingly easy for a 12-string guitar. It is certainly not a rare collector's item, too many have been sold. But you have to look for a long time to find one in this condition, and if you are searching for a reliable Höfner with some vintage flair, this is the one for you.
