Electric guitar Höfner, model 164 III, built in 1970. Höfner's attempt to counter the extremely dominant Fender body shapes of the time with something independent. Appreciated for its lack of seventies "electric bells and whistles" - a simple, honest and straightforward fun guitar.
Material & Electrics:
Beautifully light body made of bright wood, either maple, ash or lime. Lacquer finish in the classic red-black two-tone sunburst, also known as Black Rose in Germany since the fifties. One-piece maple neck with truss rod (accessible from the body) and rosewood fingerboard. Open single tuners with tulip grips. Tuning stable and solid tremolo unit. Two single coil pickups, individually switchable on and off, master tone and volume control, standard jack socket.
Unknown. We took it over from a renowned collector who had not played it for the last 25 years.
We completely disassembled it, cleaned it extensively, polished the lacquer surfaces, stripped and oiled the fingerboard, polished the frets, refurbished and oiled the tuners, polished all the hardware. Finally, new strings fitted and setup carried out. We carefully touched up the few dents and scratches on the edges that had accumulated over the years. Finally, new strings were fitted and a setup carried out.
This 164 III is in collector's condition: 100% original down to the smallest screw, perfectly clean and completely odourless. A special treat is the shim for the four neck screws: it is extremely rare to find in the version with Höfner engraving. A few bumps and minor scratches and cracks in the lacquer, especially at the edges - that's about it. Overall, the guitar shows such a subtle and beautiful patina. Fretboard and frets are as good as new, the neck is bolt straight, the string action perfectly low and without buzzing. Everything is stable and works perfectly. The electrics work properly and without scratching or noise. The sound is typical sixties, more rock than beat, especially the neck pickup has a lot of power. The minimal electrics deliver everything you need, unadulterated and direct, with enough bandwidth. And with the stable whammy, even Hank Marvin would have enjoyed the sound! Not an extroverted show guitar, but an honest workhorse and original seventies collector's item with charisma and character. We would leave any new China budget product behind without hesitation.
